UCN was an alliance in Earth: 2025 that dissolved some time in 2002 (?).

The First Collapse of UCN, 2002

I am sure many of you have read Fin's goodbye on the UCN site. The final chapter of the United Council of Nations has been written. I for one, feel no joy as this once proud Behemoth gasps its final breath.

Many have long waited for the moment when UCN would die. I have to wonder how many of them are truly satisfied. For those who are former members of UCN that had been calling for its downfall, you were obviously never true members. A true member would now be saddened to see something they put so much time and effort into finally falter. I spit on any ex UCN member who now takes joy from this sorry day. You are traitors, and you do no justice to the Legacy of the UCN.

I began my earth Career in the UCN and I immediately saw that it was an establishment worthy of dedication. I was honoured to be a part of something greater than myself. I took pride in doing my best to honour those who came before me in the illustrious history of the great alliance. It is true that my career diverged from the path the UCN was following, and I was not there when the last flame flickered and went out. Some may say I abondoned my alliance in its time of need, but I left the UCN out of my love for it.

Fingolfin was the captain of that ship, and like any honourable captain, he went down with it. But it is the duty of the rest of the crew to save themselves, to carry on the memories and ideals; to tell the tale of those who did not make it.

My voyage from the listering UCN began in a life boat with close associates, including such people as Wax, who helped row the boat to shore. The survivors banded together, driven by the very ideologies and goals that had once powered the great UCN on its voyage though the endless seas.

While we went on to build a new ship in the hopes of honouring the former, other stayed on board the UCN to bail out the water now hopelessly filling the holds. Something must be said of their courage, and their resolve. Their struggle, while in vain, was testament to the type of people who helped the UCN run so smoothly in its prime. These people are the reasons its sails were always full, and its coarse always straight.

While those brave souls struggled to stay above the crashing waves of the ensuing storm, those who had left with hope fueling the strokes of the oars, built a new ship similar to the first. Many hands went into its building, and the final product was truly beautiful to behold. Still, she had a lot to prove. She was the decendent of one of the greatest to ever ply these waters. When she finally set sail, she was known as Elysium.

The Elysium set sail in time to save many of those who stayed behind, too stubborn to let the dead die. They were hesitant to move on, but the guiding light of hope, the feul of Elysium, would soon show them the way.

It is true that the UCN has sunk to the darkest depths of the Eternal Sea, but to say it has truly died would be to ignore all those who have stayed together, who have worked hard so that the ideals, the goals, the dedication of the great UCN live on in Elysium. Great treasure has fallen to the sea floor, but the true treasure of the UCN, its crew, live to sail again.

Picture if you will, a beautiful butterfly emerging from the dried husk of its cocoon. The catipillar is not dead, it has merely transformed to continue its destiny.

Mourn for the UCN if you must, let your salty tears add to that of the sea. but do not let the waves crash down upon you, dragging you under. Do not let the current of despair pull you away. Instead, add your strength to the hand at the helm. Help steer Elysium to a future as bright and glorious as the history of the UCN.

The Second Collapse of UCN, 2005

There are so many people I'll miss and so many people to thank

that being said I'm a little too choked up to get into this right now.

Thanks for 8 years of memories and 7 years of me battling as UCN leader against most of you

Here's a post from the UCN member board

I've deliberated on this post for a long while but I believe the time has come.

As most of you know I've disliked this game for a long, long time. The only thing keeping me around since about the time of the SOL war was the people in the UCN that I've built relationships with.

The only other reason I stayed was a sense of responsibility to the people who looked to me for leadership. Out of duty I stayed much longer than I wanted till RD forced us closed.

It never set well with me that this alliance was forced to close not by choice but by necessity. When the opportunity and interest came around to re-open with many of the same people I took the chance despite my reticence for the game for the sole purpose of dictating UCN's own future.

My goals in coming back were 1) to end when I wanted and 2) to make it back to a top 10 ranked alliance before ending. One out of two isn't bad I guess. In normal rankings we are about 18th right now but based on what I see I just don't think we have enough committed leadership left to make the move up. We've hit equilibrium. I have never been one to settle for mediocrity well so that left me two choices either a) start spending 6-8 hours a day on this game which I swore never to do again of b) close our doors.

I'm choosing to close our doors.

Please recognize that I discussed this at length with much of leadership seeing if there was enough interest to get someone else in to help me lead and at this time the answer from many of the veterans was more a sigh of relief that they can go about their normal lives rather than enthusiasm to step up into more leadership.

All good things must come to an end. I took over a dead alliance in July of 1998 and we were a force to be reckoned with from then forward. Nearly 1300 people have come through our doors and have completed a biodex. We've been involved in some of the greatest wars in history. The thing people will always say about UCN is that we did it our way regardless of consequences. I like that.

At the end of this reset I'm turning out the lights for good. Some may ask why not just let UCN keep going under other leadership than your own. There are a few answers to this I suppose.

The first is selfishness. I put so many hours into this alliance that I cannot stand it being run by someone else. I think of the UCN as my baby. Unfairly perhaps because many great people have also put time into leading such as Croaker, Thumper, Mist, OBwan, Rocko, Seduction, Wax and the list goes on. I can't help my feelings though.

The 2nd reason relates to the first. If I think it's my baby I would want someone I could trust implicitly to run UCN in my stead to uphold the standards and practices of this alliance and frankly I can't think of anyone.

The 3rd reason is the fact that if UCN is here I'll be tempted to keep playing and I really need to move on in life.

It's been one heck of a ride. A big thank you to everyone for being a part of something special.
